  QUIZ QUESTIONS

1.   It is no accident that a red color is placed at the very center of the Eritrearn flag. The word Eritrea is an Italian form of a Greek name (Erythraia) which stands for "red"[land]". Countries that form borders with Eritrea are, Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti. The northeastern part of the country is opened to a coast line along the red Sea that runs directly across Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Eritrea's history reveals that it once was a part of a larger community that included the Medri Bahri Kingdom, the Hamasien Republic and the Ethiopian empire as well as the Ottoman Empire. This consortium of states eventually led to the formation of Italian Eritrea. Eritrea, in 1947 became a part of a federation with Ethiopia called, Federation of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Eventually, Eritrea was annexed by Ethiopia. Meaning, Eritrea became a part of Ethiopia. After many years of this federation, Eritrea decided to break away and become an independent state. That brought about the the Eritrean War of Independence. Finally, the war ended and Eritrea became an independent state in 1991. This is why some of the same languages spoken in Eritrea are also spoken in Ethiopia. In 1941 Eritrea was no longer Italian Eritrea, and the United Kingdom mandate ended in 1951. Eritrea is a member the African Union, the United Nations and IGAD (Intergovermental Authority on Development). This is an eight-country trading bloc based in Eastern Africa. Participating members are the governments from the Horn of Africa, Nile Valley and African Great Lakes. The headquarters are located in Djibouti. All the countries that make up IGAD are the following: 1. Djibouti, 2. Eritrea, 3. Ethiopia, 4. Somalia, 5. Sudan, 6. South Sudan, 7. Kenya and 8. Uganda. Eritrea is also an observer in the Arab League. Now here is the question. Why did Eritrea opt to break away from Ethiopia? What were the reasons for not wanting to remain a part of Ethiopia? Is Eritrea better off now than when it was a part of Ethiopia? Was the war necessary? Why or why not?

2. Eritrea's constitution was adopted in 1997.  According to the
constitution, Eritrea shall be a "presidential republic with a unicameral parliamentary democracy". What does this mean? Is this constitutional stipulation being implimented or not?

   3. Is Eritrea a single-party state or a bi-or multiparty state?  There was
a border dispute with Ethiopia in 1998 that led to a two-year war
with Ethiopia.  It is estimated that  over 100,000 soldiers were
killed on both sides (Ethiopia and Eritrea).  Who won the war and
how was the border dispute settled?

4. Eritrea has no official language. The constitution allows all the
languages to have equality.  Nevertheless, Tigrinya and Arabic are
spoken and used widely throughout the country. Italian and English
are also used widely. The Semitic languages in Eritrea are Tigre,
Tigrinya, the newly recognized Dahlik and Arabic.  Some of the
Afro-Asiatic languages belonging to the Cushitic branch are also widely spoken in the country. Some of them incude Afar, Beja, Blin and Saho.
Other languages include, Nilo-Saharan languages (Kunama and Nara).
These are also considered mother tongue.  Of all these languages, which
ones are used as working language, and are also used in secondary and university education? Can you name those languages?

African countries in the order in which they are
listed.  They are listed with the country with the
highest per capital income above and the lowest
per capital income at the bottom of the list. Liberia
is 6 up from the bottom.   Total number of countries

Eritrea, the pride of the oppressed people,
is a testament that truth prevails.

Eritrea, Eritrea,
has taken her rightful place in the world.

The supreme dedication that brought her liberation,
will serve to rebuild her and make her green,
We shall honour her with progress,
It is our legacy to embellish her.
