1. Guinea-Bissau was in a very close relationship with Cape Verde. Both countries worked together to declare their independence from the Portuguese. Amilcar Cabral played a very important role in the process. Who was he and what did he do for his country? Which one of these countries was his country? Cape Verde or Guinea-Bissau?

2. Guinea-Bissau was once a part of the Mali Empire, and it belonged
to a Kingdom called Gabu, which was a part of the Mali Empire.
In the 19th century, this country became a colony of Portugual.
It declared independence in 1973 but it was recognized in 1974.
After independence, The city, Bissau was declared capital of  Guinea.
The name of the capital city was added to the name of the country
to clarify any confusion between it and the other Guineans in the region.
From our study, we have studied: Guinea-Conakry, Equatorial Guinea,
and now, Guinea-Bissau.  There is another Guinea which is not in
Africa.  It is called Papua New Guinea.  Therefore, to eliminate the
confusion, Guinea decided to attach its capital city to the name of the
county to be known as Guinea-Bissau.  Guinea-Bissau suffered the
same instability most African countries go through right after
independence.  It is said that "no elected president has successfully
served a full-five years term."

This region was one of those areas on the West Coast of Africa the
European traders referred to as Slave Coast.  Can you describe the
the type of slave trade that went on in this region, especially in
the region we now call Guinea-Bissau?

3. The World Health Organization (WHO) is very involved in several
health related programs in Guinea-Bissau.  HIV affects about 1.8%
of the population.  Pregnant women receive anti retroviral coverage.
Malaria kills about 9% of the population yearly. Antimalaria nets are
provided for the children under 5 years. Cholera epidemic is also
one of the health problems in Guinea-Bissau.  WHO is working hard
to deal with some of these health problems.

My question is, What is the national government doing about the
health problems?  How much of their annual budget is allocated for

4. Guinea-Bissau comprises many ethnicities and several distinct languages.
The country also has several customs and social structures. Here are some
of the languages spoken in Guinea-Bissau:
1. Fula
2. Mandinka
3. Balanta
4. Papel
5. Manjaco
6. Mancanha
7. Mestiços
In addition to the indigenous languages, there are some Portuguese
and mixed Portuguese and Chinese ancestry from Macau.

The official language of Guinea-Bissau is Portuguese, but only 14% of the
population speaks Portuguese.  The Portuguese-based creole (Krio)
language is what about 44% of the people speak.  Guinea-Bissau is
surrounded by French speaking nations, Guinea-Conakry and Senegal.
Since Guinea-Bissau is surrounded by French speaking nations, French is
taught in school system.

My question is, one of these ethnic groups is also an ethnic group in
Liberia.  Which one is it?

Portuguese lyrics: English translation:
Sol, suor e o verde e mar,
Séculos de dor e esperança;
Esta é a terra dos nossos avós!
Fruto das nossas mãos,
Da flôr do nosso sangue:
Esta é a nossa pátria amada.
Viva a pátria gloriosa!
Floriu nos céus a bandeira da luta.
Avante, contra o jugo estrangeiro!
Nós vamos construir
Na pátria imortal
A paz e o progresso!
Nós vamos construir
Na pátria imortal
A paz e o progresso!
Ramos do mesmo tronco,
Olhos na mesma luz:
Esta é a força da nossa união!
Cantem o mar e a terra
A madrugada e o sol
Que a nossa luta fecundou.
Sun, sweat, verdure, and sea,
Centuries of pain and hope;
This is the land of our ancestors.
Fruit of our hands,
Of the flower of our blood:
This is our beloved country.
Long live our glorious country!
The banner of our struggle
Has fluttered in the skies.
Forward, against the foreign yoke!
We are going to build
Peace and progress
In our immortal country!
Peace and progress
In our immortal country!
Branches of the same trunk,
Eyes in the same light;
This is the force of our unity!
The sea and the land,
The dawn and the sun are singing
That our struggle has borne fruit!
